Warwick Davis Celebrates the Release of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ at World Duty Free, Gatwick Airport

Today Warwick Davis, the much loved icon of the Star Wars franchise, was at World Duty Free, in Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal to celebrate the release of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, the epic adventure from Lucasfilm which has already become the UK’s biggest opening of 2016. Passengers can feel the Force first hand before take-off at Gatwick as part of an exclusive takeover in the World Duty Free store, with Warwick Davis on hand meeting fans, posing for selfies and autographing Christmas gifts to make them extra special. Warwick also took over the @WorldDutyFree Twitter account to answer questions about his experience making the films.

Making a dramatic entrance flanked by stormtroopers, Warwick posed in front of the store alongside a life-size LEGO® model of the Dark Lord himself and an 8.2ft replica model of K-2SO, the captivating new Imperial droid character in Rogue One.

Warwick has appeared in five of the eight Star Wars films and his long association with the saga dates back to when he was just eleven years old and played the role of an Ewok called Wicket in ‘Return of the Jedi’.  He appears in Rogue One as a new Rebel character called Weeteef Cyubee, fighting in Saw Gerrero’s (Forest Whittaker) team.

“Warwick is performing pretty blind inside the animatronic head,” creature-effect supervisor Neal Scalan says. “He is cocooned in his costume and his imagination brings such incredible life to his performance.” Though Weeteef is a good Rebel, his look was inspired by a mean fish. “We thought of a piranha,” says Scalan, pointing out that Weeteef’s name is slang (wee teeth) for his tiny, sharp incisors.

The activity in Gatwick North is also complemented by additional activity in Gatwick South, which runs until 17th January 2017.  Passengers will discover a life-size replica costume exhibit featuring the heroes of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’.  Led by Jyn Erso (played by Academy Award® nominee Felicity Jones),  Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Bodhi Rock (Riz Ahmed), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), the costumes are displayed together for passengers to pose with as they pass through the departure lounge in Gatwick South. Endless opportunities for #RogueOnehaslanded pictures are just waiting to be explored!

To make the Rogue One experience even more immersive, customers can try out the Virtual Reality installation in the World Duty Free Gatwick south store.  As soon as they put on the VR helmet, they are transported to a galaxy far, far away!  In addition, World Duty free has a whole range of LEGO® sets to choose from including Darth Vader, Resistance X-Wing Fighter, Millennium Falcon, Imperial Assault Hovertank and Krennic’s Imperial Shuttle, to name just a few.  Customers can also discover a range of exclusive 50ml Star Wars fragrances – Dark, Light, Droid, Rey, Revenge and Galaxy - that capture the essence of Rebellion!
